چکیده

• The peculiarities of the arterial circulation, including pulsatile flow in tubes with distensible walls and multiple branchings, make it difficult to apply classical hydrodynamic principles to the aortic blood flow without direct experimental verification. An example of the present confusion regarding fundamental concepts is the question of mixing in the aortic root. The generally accepted view is that thorough mixing takes place in this location.' Some of the experimental evidence, however, suggests that complete mixing does not occur regularly in any part of the central circulation.' As a substitute for a direct experimental approach, the Reynolds number has been used to predict the type of flow that may occur in various parts of the aorta. It is doubtful that the Reynolds number can be used with confidence to predict whether aortic blood flow will be laminar or turbulent since even with steady flow in rigid pipes the critical Reynolds number may vary greatly depending on local conditions, while the effects produced by pulsatile flow and distensible tubes are unknown. A few attempts have been made to visualize the distribution of dyes either directly or by cinematography. In view of the difficulties of such visualizations of dyes in the aorta, it is not surprising that the above studies reached different conclusions. The method of sampling simultaneously from multiple arteries following the injections of dyes proximally in the central circulation also is open to question.

Computational Analysis of Blood Flow Characteristics in an Aortic System with Abdominal and Left Common Iliac Aneurysm Pre- and Post-Stent Grafting

The aim of this study was to demonstrate how fluid dynamic parameters are affected by aortic geometry and flow condition in two cases. Case A included blood flow analysis in aortic system with abdominal aortic aneurysm and left common iliac aneurysm before stent graft placement, while in case B was included stent graft geometry, at the site of the aneurysms. An individual patient-specific geome...

Validation of turbulent kinetic energy in an aortic coarctation before and after intervention - MRI vs. CFD

Background The blood flow through aortic coarctations can undergo transition to turbulence, as the narrowing causes the velocity to increase. Increased levels of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) are undesirable, as energy is drawn from the mean flow to the turbulent fluctuations. It has recently been shown that TKE in blood flow can be measured with MRI [1], and the aim of this study is to assess...

CFD Hydrodynamics Analysis of Syngas Flow in Slurry Bubble Column

In this paper, a CFD model of syngas flow in slurry bubble column was developed. The model is based on an Eulerian-Eulerian approach and includes three phases: slurry of solid particles suspended in paraffin oil and syngas bubbles. Numerical calculations carried out for catalyst particles, bubble coalescence and breakup included bubble-fluid drag force and interfacial area effects. Also, the ef...

The study on hemodynamic effect of series type LVAD on aortic blood flow pattern: a primary numerical study

BACKGROUND Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) has become an alternative treatment for end-stage heart failure patients. Series type of LVAD, as a novel LVAD, has attracted more and more attention. The hemodynamic effects of series type LVAD on aortic blood pattern are considered as its important characteristics; however, the precise mechanism of it is still unclear. METHODS To clarify the ...

Numerical Simulations of Aortic Blood Flow with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Numerical Simulations of Aortic Blood Flow with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve By Ruth D. Blum One of the most common congenital heart defects is bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), occurring in about 1% to 2% of the population. In patients with BAV the aortic valve deviates from normal in that it only has two leaflets instead of three. BAV can result in altered hemodynamics and decreased performance of the ...
